Kane looked at me for a while and then he spoke.
“Oh,” was all that he said and the he shut the door once I was inside of the car.
Okay.
So, that wasn’t the response that I’d thought that he would have, but it was good enough for me.
After all, it wasn’t like I’d been the one to pull the triggers.
Kane leaned down to kiss me and told me that he would see me later.
I wanted to see if he was going to text me once he was back at the car lot.
He did.
So I assumed that everything really was okay between us.
The kids and I ran around for a while, and as soon as I pulled up at home, Lee Lee pulled up behind me.
I rolled my eyes.
She got out and approached me.
“I bet the police would love to know what role you played in Vicki’s and Jinx’s death.”
“What? I didn’t make them kill each other. And I only did it for you dumb ass. I wanted you to have your life back. I loved you so much, but here lately, I regret ever trying to help you.”
“Well, you did and you are still partially responsible for their deaths.”
“Prove it,” I said to her.
I got the baby out of the car and asked Krissie to head towards the house.
“I can’t prove it. But I can prove something else. I’m sure Kane would love to know what you and Drake did to him.”
I glared at her and then I turned my back to her and walked away.
She followed me.
What was she talking about?
After sitting the baby in the swing and getting Krissie a snack, I stood, face to face with Lee Lee.
“What are you talking about?”
“Oh, you know what I’m talking about. The accident.”
What?
How in the hell would she know about that?
“Who told you that?”
“Don’t worry about it. But I know that Drake did something to the car to cause the accident that almost killed Kane. So would you like to tell him? Or should I?”
“You wouldn’t dare.”
“Oh, but I would.”
I was trying to figure out how in the hell she would know something like that.
Drake damn sure wouldn’t have told her and if I remembered correctly she was already “missing” or in hiding when Drake had done the dirty deed that had actually been intended for Jinx.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about. If Drake did something to Kane to cause the accident, he sure as hell didn’t tell me.”
“Liar! It was your idea.”
How in the hell did she know that?
“No it wasn’t. And I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Yes you do. And I can actually prove it.”
If she could prove it then I was in trouble.
In more ways than one.
I was sure that she would tell Kane and that might be something that he couldn’t overlook.
He’d almost died.
He actually should have died but he’d lived through it.
Maybe I could blame it all on Drake and I would pretend like I had nothing to do with it.
But that might not work depending on what so called proof she had.
“I didn’t have anything to do with it.”
“Yes you did. You and Drake did. Not only can I expose you to Kane, but I’m sure that that would fall under attempted murder or something. I wonder,” she said.
“Lee Lee this is ridiculous! I swear to you, if you do this, I will never speak to you again. There won’t be shit else that you have to say to me!”
I was so mad that I could cry.
She was my sister damn it!
What was wrong with her?
“It isn’t like I haven’t lived without you before. All you have to do is leave Kane alone.”
There was no point in continuing the conversation with her.
For the most part, I just wanted her far, far away from me.
Even if I had to leave Kane alone to make that happen.
“You think you know everything but you don’t. You’ve had your love of your life. He’s dead. And now you are trying to love mine.”
“More than him, more than anything, I love you Legacy. All of this just isn’t worth it.”
Just as I finished my sentence, in walked Kane.
Lee Lee smiled and turned to face him.
He looked at me.
I didn’t know how she knew that Drake had caused the accident, but I was sure that no matter what I’d said that she was going to tell Kane.
Hell, knowing her she was probably even going to try to go to the police or something, depending on how well she could actually prove it.
She was just that crazy about Kane and it was clear that she didn’t give a damn about me or the fact that I was her own flesh and blood.
As far as she was concerned, we were enemies.
“Moe, don’t you have something to tell Kane?”
She looked at me with a grin, but she wouldn’t have the last laugh.
I would.
She must have forgotten.
This wasn’t my first time at the rodeo and sister or not, she was about to get what was coming to her.
And I was going to make sure of that.
But until then.
“Yes, Kane, I have something to tell you.”
~***~
I took a chance and told Kane the truth.
I told him what Drake had done to Jinx’s car.
I told him that he’d done it because I thought that Jinx had set up the attack, but of course Drake had known that Daddy had been behind it all along.
I guess he was just playing along.
Or maybe it would have been his way of getting back at Kane for overstepping his boundaries with me.
Either way, he had been down for it, and had gone through with the plan.
It just ended up being Kane who’d suffered.
Mad?
Hell yeah Kane was mad!
Not as mad as I’d thought that he would be, but he was upset none the least.
Lee Lee had left with a smile on her face as we argued that day, but she was upset to find that it hadn't given her the results that she’d wanted.
Kane was still coming around.
And I was sure that she was somewhere watching.
“Hey,” I said to Kane as he feed the baby.
He’d brought over both of his son’s.
His son by Jinx was a little older, and he looked just like her. Kane had taken him from Jinx’s family and moved him with his and I got the impression that he was actually starting to enjoy fatherhood.
Kane’s and Naomi’s son, Krissie’s brother, looked a little more like Kane.
Some blended ass family we would be if we were really trying to have a future but I wasn’t so sure that we would.
And I kind of got the feeling that Kane felt the same way.
“Are you still mad?”
“Well, if I’d tried to kill you wouldn’t you be mad too?
“I didn’t try to kill you and neither did Drake. He was trying to kill J---,” I stopped because her son was within listening range.
“Obviously you didn’t need any help with that. You managed to have your hands in that too.”
“But Kane you’ve done plenty to me. And I do mean plenty. Think about the blackmailing me for you know what, the lies, and everything.”
Kane started to burp the baby.
“You good.”
I didn’t like the way that he’d said his comment.
“But?”
“But nothing. If I forgive you, you have to forgive me.”
What the hell had he done now?
“For what?”
“I’ll tell you in due time. When I’m ready. So, let’s just drop it.”
He reached me the baby and walked out the door.
My mind was racing.
There was no telling what Kane was responsible for doing and I figured that it was probably ten times worse than anything that I could even imagine.
I looked out the window as he sat on the porch.
I saw the little old woman wave at him and then motion for him to come across the street.
He went.
Whatever this was between us was probably a big mistake and I was starting to wonder if it was even worth it.
Was it worth falling out with Lee Lee every day and ruining our chances of ever getting our bond back that we used to have?
Was it really worth it?
Just as I was in my thoughts, Lee Lee pulled up outside and met Kane before he had completely made it across the street.
They seemed to exchange words and then she drove away.
The fact that she was acting the way that she was told me that she was a woman in love…even if he didn’t love her back.
I used to show out when I was Drake’s side chick, so I knew how it was to want someone more than they seemed to want you.
The only difference was that Drake and I actually had real history and we were still fooling around.
How could I be sure that they weren’t?
Kane could be lying.
He and Lee Lee could have had more than some kind of friendship like he proclaimed.
Was that what he had to tell me?
Was that what he wanted me to forgive?
Kane assisted Mrs. Thomas across the street for a little while and then finally he headed back over to the house.
“I’ll be back,” he said to me as he got the boys together to take them back to his mother.
Good.
I wanted to talk to him about maybe just being friends.
I didn’t want to fight with Lee Lee if I didn’t have to.
Maybe I would still hit the road like I’d planned to do originally and leave Kane, Lee Lee and everyone else behind.
Kane left and before I could start dinner, there was a knock at the door.
I assumed that it would be Lee Lee with some more drama.
If so, I was going to tell her my plans to leave Kane alone and then slap the taste out of her mouth for being such a bitch.
But it wasn’t her.
It was the little old lady.
“Hey sweetie,” she said coming in.
“Hi.”
“How is that baby doing?”
“He is fine. He’s sleeping.”
She smiled.
“He looks so much like Drake.”
He absolutely did.
He was his twin and every time I looked at him, I couldn’t help but think about how much Drake would have adored him.
It would have been his absolute pleasure to be his father, but he would never get that chance of course.
“Well, you know how I told you that I forget things, often. But eventually, I always remember?”
I nodded.
“That girl, the one that was outside earlier talking to Kane was here before. Before you were. Before Drake died. I saw her twice. Neither time Drake was here and it was always late in the evening. And both times were days before you came. I’d never been able to tell him, because I never saw him again.”
Lee Lee had been here before?
Why?
How did she know about this house when Drake hadn't even told me?
“Thank you.”
“Do you know her? Is she kin to Kane?”
“No. Actually she’s my sister.”
“Hmm,” was all she said and headed back out the door.
Finding out that Lee Lee had come to the house only days before Drake’s death had the wheels in my head spinning.
There was something that she wasn’t telling me.
And I was going to find out just what it was.
~***~
“I think there is something that Lee Lee isn’t telling me?”
My sister Chardonnay looked at me.
She sat there in name brand clothing from head to toe, but her face looked awful.
She didn’t look the same.
No matter the thousands of merchandise that she wore on her body, there was something different about her.
Whoever said that money will change a person was absolutely talking about her.
She had splurged and purchased everything from a new house, and a new car, all the way to overpriced shoes and unnecessary pieces of jewelry with her half of the money that Daddy had left us.
Though he’d left us all a good bit in cash, and after dividing up the bonds and stocks, we all had more than enough.
But I had a feeling that hers was going to be gone, sooner than later.
And of course she’d quit her job, but it would be back to the workforce she would go.
I’d barely spent anything.
Not from the money that I had from Drake, or selling the houses and I hadn't even thought about the money that I had from Daddy.
Hell, I didn’t really need it and since Kane had been around, what little stuff that I did have to take care of, he had been doing it.
He and I were still in a weird space.
He told me to ignore Legacy, but she was hard to ignore.
He still seemed to want to give us a try but I knew that trying with him meant that I would lose my sister.
Was that really what I wanted?
“What do you mean?”
“Well for starters, she knew things that she shouldn’t have about something that only Drake and I would have known. Something that we’d only discussed in private.”
“Like what?”
“That’s not important.”
“What about Kane’s accident?”
I looked at Chardonnay.
“She told me a while ago. She was ranting about you and how you were complaining about her wanting to pursue a relationship with him and then she made the comment that if it had been up to you he would have been dead anyway.”
“But how would she know that? Had Drake told her?”
Chardonnay shrugged.
“She never said how she knew.”
“And just to clarify, the accident was meant for Jinx. Not Kane.”
We talked for a little while longer, but I still had so many questions and I knew that the only one that would be able to answer them was Lee Lee.
Since I’d put the kids in daycare to give me a break during the day, I headed to her house.
I made sure to have a little something in my purse just in case she got out of line.
I didn’t like feeling that way about my own sister, but I just couldn’t be sure.
I knocked on the door and she opened it.
She looked disappointed to see that it was me.
Before I could even open my mouth, her eyes lit up and I looked behind me.
It was Kane.
But assuming that he saw my car he tried to keep driving, but I’d already seen him.
What the hell is going on here?
“Damn it. You made him leave. What do you want Moe?
I noticed that Lee Lee was wearing nothing but lingerie.
“So Kane was coming over here?”
“Duh.”
“For what?”
She grinned.
“To see his side chick what do you think.”
Whether she was lying or telling the truth about Kane wasn’t really the issue.
I was just sick of her mouth.
I slapped her.
Lee Lee opened her mouth and I grabbed her face.
“Come on bitch. You got all that mouth. Let’s see if you got the hands to back it up! Come on!”
I wanted to fight her.
I wanted to beat the hell out of her but Lee Lee pulled away from me and just stood there and smiled.
“Oh so you mad huh?”
“I’m sick of your shit! I came over here to try to talk to you, but I don’t even know why I bothered! Talking doesn’t work with you so maybe knocking some sense into you with my fist w
ill.”
“Okay you want to talk? Fine bitch, let’s talk.”
She grabbed her robe and put it on over her matching bra and panties and sat on the couch.
“You were about to have sex with Kane?”
“If I was lucky. I asked him to come and talk. When I called him, he’d said that he needed to talk to me anyway.”
“About what?”
“I don’t know Moe. Had you not shown up I would have found out.”
I wondered what Kane had to say to Legacy.
But this ends here and now.
I called his phone but just as I did, there was a knock at the door.
Lee Lee headed to it and when she opened it Kane walked inside.
“You were coming to have sex with her?”
“What? No. I was coming to talk to her.”
“About what?”
“I was going to try to pay her to go away,” Kane said.
Lee Lee smacked her lips.
“She doesn’t need your money.”
“Trust me, everyone wants more money.”
I looked at Kane suspiciously.
If that was the case, why did he keep driving when he saw me?
It was as though he read my thoughts.
“I figured that maybe it was better that whatever you had planned was probably the better route to take. That’s why I was going to keep going but I turned around because I want to make sure that this issue is handled. Right now.”
“Excuse me, I don’t mean to break up this little love connection but you can’t pay me to go anywhere. Don’t forget Kane I know your little secret Kane.”
“I’m not the only one with secrets Lee Lee.”
Wait?
What secrets?
Kane looked at me.
“I have something to tell you Moe and I don’t know how you are going to take it but first I want to say that our sudden relationship caught us both by surprise. Hell, who knew that we would be here. But we are. And I want to stay here if you will let me after I tell you what I have to tell you.”
Kane went in his pocket and pulled out a small black box.
